Sport Premium

PE and Sport play a very important part in the life of St John Fisher Catholic Primary School. We believe that physical education and sport contribute to the holistic development of young people and through participation in sport and physical education, young people learn more about key values such as teamwork, fair play and respect for themselves and others.

There is significant evidence to show the positive effects of sport and exercise on children’s physical health, growth and development. Furthermore, sport also provides a healthy environment for young people to learn how to deal with competition and how to cope with both winning and losing

What is the Sports Premium?

In April 2013, the Government announced new funding (Sport Premium) for physical education (PE) and sport. The government is providing funding of £150 million per annum for the 3 academic years 2013/14, 2014/15 and 2015/16 with the funding being jointly provided by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport. Each school will receive £8,000 plus an extra £5 per pupil each year, with the money only being spent on improving the quality and breadth of PE and sport provision for all children.

How have we used the Sports Premium Funding at St. John Fisher?

2016/17

In the 2016/17 academic year we will receive a total of £9765 which will be spent as follows :

Creating a mile line through an all weather track on the field and marking of a line on the playgrounds to join it. Total £3900
Continuing Professional Development for the 2 teachers in Year 2, Year 1 and Year 3 (autumn 1/ spring 1/ spring 2), 6 teachers in total. Total £3360.
One session with a PE specialist on introducing the orienteering course to a Year 6 class Total £250
Game On lunch time provisions for the summer term, 10 sessions Total £220
Year 4 Top up swimming sessions, Autumn 1 Total £600. 23 children did a 2 week intensive program with the successful outcome that 18 (78%) achieved either their 25 or 50 metre badge or both
Year 3 swimming, Summer term for 2 classes, 4 weeks in total Total £1200, there will be a £10 per child voluntary contribution towards the cost of this.

As of 30/9/16 we have spent (or committed) £9530 with £235 remaining.

2015/16

In 2015/16 we received £9765. The money was spent on :

concluding the professional development in PE and sport so that all teachers in years 1 to 6 have received this. This quality-assured professional training for staff raised their confidence and competence in teaching PE and sport.
As part of this training, the money was also used to provide cover staff to release teachers for the planning phase.

2014/15

In 2014/15, the second year of funding, we received £9471. This money :

continued to be used to provide professional development in PE and sport for the teachers in another 3 year groups, one term per year. This quality-assured professional training for staff raised their confidence and competence in teaching PE and sport.
As part of this training, the money was also used to provide cover staff to release teachers for the planning phase.
Newly qualified teachers were sent on PE courses.
helped to subsidise transport, pool hire and swimming instruction.
purchased 17 mini ipads and a charging cabinet for use in PE lessons for peer and self assessment.

2013/14

In 2013/14, the first year of funding, we received £6020. This was used to :

provide professional development in PE and sport for the teachers in 3 year groups, one term per year. This quality-assured professional training for staff raised their confidence and competence in teaching PE and sport.
As part of this training, the money was also used to provide cover staff to release teachers for the planning phase.
It was also used to subsidise transport, pool hire and swimming instruction to allow all pupils from years 3 and 4 to have swimming lessons.
